River City Racin' Just Did It

Well the Mighty Mo (Missouri River) tried her best to dissuade us—but we
showed her!! Two absolutely gorgeous days, boats from several states,
crowds from many miles away, South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard, and
the best fans ever. The River was high, but completely closed off for our event and
local crews were constantly on the lookout for debris. The Site was nearly perfect:
a lovely Park, complete with big trees, bouncy things for kids, a beer garden, RV
spaces, cabins and guest facilities. There were 2 full sets of Fire and Ambulance
teams, with Police and Sheriff(s) ever present. Spectators were treated to up close
racing plus photo-op periods during “Open Pits” when they got to meet the drivers
and ask questions of the crews. (Driver Kevin Eacret put over 200 children in his
UL 11 cockpit).

Jack Devlin gave the Governor a special treat by taking him for a couple of laps
in his Vintage Flatbottom CJ 23. Speeding around the course at 80mph, wife Linda
Daugaard and the crowd saw the Governor’s huge smile and non-stop waving.

Promptly after pulling up to the dock, Jeff Bernard retrieved the driving suit he had

loaned him and got right in the S1, Liquid Lizard for the next Heat. Challenging Jeff
for the lead all the way, was the highly competitive Inboard Chairman, Dutch Squires
in his “Megabucks”. On lap two, as they headed in to Turn Two, Dutch was just
ahead when he hooked and Jeff was unable to avoid a collision. Rescue teams
reached them in seconds and, after medical evaluation, both returned to the Pits and
dry clothes. Thanks to both of the 1 Litre and 2.5 Stock teams for a great show and
competitive racing heats that added to the show.

People Notes: ULHRA’s Pat McQuade, again, showed his worth—not only as a

First Class Rescue Director, but also in setting up the course and managing boat
displays all over town (he never slept!) Shane Pratt (E 77), accepted the annual
“Best Rigger” crane award. His “Family Affair” crew was joined by family members
from Ohio—all in those snappy uniforms. Chris Grant/Woodshed Embroidery/UL 3:
his dimples and crowd interaction were a big hit during “Open Pits”. Phil and Bianca
Bononcini returned to Seattle for a family illness, so Nick Bononcini became Team

Manager of TWO 1 litres. Kudos to both Dutch Squires and Kathleen Maurer for
stepping up to drive Y 8.

The choice of the American Creek Campground for the 2011 Chamberlain-Oacoma
Race, proved to be an excellent decision. Ingress and egress were unhampered,
and local assistance was SO available, i.e. the need for a machinist on at least two
occasions, plus several other needs for the teams. There is a General Store across

the Highway, close proximity to town, with very good choices of lodging, dining and
other services. Pepsi, Inc. was the Title Sponsor, with Complimenting Sponsorships
from AmericInn, Howard Johnson and Super 8 along with other local business
sponsors. Team Sponsors included Charley’s Restaurant and the Anchor Grill.

Hearty congratulations. Against all odds (constant and overblown news reports
of flooding, incorrect and unfounded river facts(?) and rumors flying), President
Tom Davis and the amazing River City Racin’ team working tirelessly,
JUST DID IT!!!!!

The Governor is coming, The Governor is coming!!!

By Patti Darling

Dennis Daugaard, newly elected Governor of the State of South Dakota, has changed his schedule in order to greet ULHRA and APBA teams at the Opening Ceremonies on Sunday. And what a ride....from a one-room
school house, to the University of South Dakota and Northwestern Law School--working to pay his way--as a dishwasher, sandblaster, welder, bus driver and Security guard.

Professionally Governor Daugaard has been a Banker, Executive Director of the Children's Home Society of South Dakota, served 3 terms as a State Legislator, . and 2 terms as lt. Governor before the 2010 election. Personally: With wife Linda (a former teacher and librarian), he has 3 children--making this the fourth generation on the Danish family farm.

It is the shared honor of River City Racin' and the ULHRA to welcome this State's Leader.

Portion of Chamberlain Race Gate to Aid Victims
from Tom Davis, President of River City Racin’ Inc. in Chamberlain

First of all, I would like to express our sympathy to those people along the Missouri River who are being affected by this year’s flooding, and to say thank you to all of the countless volunteers who have come together to help with the flood relief efforts.

The amount of work that has been completed is nothing short of amazing and truly shows the spirit of the people of our great state.

With all the news coverage on the flood affected areas, it is easy for people to forget there are areas of the Missouri River that are usable. It is the narrow, river-like sections immediately downstream from the dams’ high releases that are flooding.

The vast, wide-open areas of the lakes are at their seasonal high water levels but flowing safely. Boat ramps are still open, people can still get on the water and the fish are still biting.

River City Racin’s Hydroplane Boat Races are still going on as scheduled on June 18-19 in Chamberlain. This event showcases several different classes of boats racing on the Missouri River going at speeds in excess of 100 mph.

Professional racers from all across the United States will be here for your enjoyment, as well as other entertainers and an outdoor concert.

In an effort to do our small part to help the flood victims, a portion of the proceeds generated at River City Racin’ will go toward flood victims’ relief in South Dakota.
