What comes to mind when you think of Seattle? Boats (Seattle has more pleasure boat owners per capita than any other metropolitan city), hydroplanes (the first hydroplane racing boat was built in Seattle), and rain. On June 19 and 20th, Classic Weekend delivered quintessential Seattle. Over 50 Classic Yacht Association yachts adorned the harbor while on the plaza classic cars, classic tunes, and race boats beckoned to waterfront visitors. Two Unlimited Light class hydroplanes, outboard race boats from Seattle Outboard Association, and the vintage 266 hydroplane Miss Havana welcomed in summer in Seattle. The only thing missing was the sunshine. In spite of unseasonably cool and wet weather, several folks climbed in the driver’s seat of an Unlimited Light hydroplane for a photograph and grabbed a copy of Thunder & LIGHTS Magazine before heading down to the marina to vote for their favorite classic wooden yacht. The Port of Seattle has been hosting Classic Weekend at Bell Harbor for over a decade and this last weekend was definitely the wettest and coolest in history. In typical Seattle style where residents are known for their outdoor attitude, spirits remained high. Conversations about classic and current boating, classic and current boat racing and of course, talk about the weather prevailed. Next up for the Unlimited Lights is racing on the Columbia River at TriCities, Washington July 23-24-25. Preview some of the race craft before the races at various Albertsons stores in the area on July 22nd. Albertsons is also a good location for purchasing general admission tickets.
