Unlimited Lights Racing Announces New Series
Partner
Power Punch Performance Lubricants Becomes
Newest Series Sponsor
The
Unlimited Light Hydroplane Racing Association today announced its newest
Series Partner for the 2010 racing season. Appearing as a team sponsor
and a sponsor in the organization’s Contingency Awards Program over the
last several seasons, Power Punch Engine Oil Performance Lubricants has
increased its sponsorship level to the category of Series Partner. As a
Series Partner, the oil additive company will have a strong presence at
every event on the racing organization’s circuit plus Presenting Sponsor
status at the Graham Trucking Cup for Seafair 2010.
The Graham Trucking Cup is the segment of Seafair, which features the
Unlimited Lights hydroplane races. Seafair is the largest festival in
the Pacific Northwest and the best attended boat race in the United
States. The five-week summertime festival includes the long-standing
hydroplane race and air show featuring the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, a
large-scale torchlight parade, and more than 30 community events
throughout July and August.
“The first time that I attended a ULHRA event and heard an Unlimited
Light go from zero to 5,000 rpm just to get up on a plane when leaving
the dock, I knew that marine motorsports was a great place to
demonstrate our products.” said Pete Morey, CEO of Power Punch. “The
ULHRA circuit lends itself well to our marketing plans and allows us to
support dealers with consistent support in brand awareness,” said Morey.
“Power Punch does well, as an example, in agricultural areas such as
South Dakota and eastern Washington where we have great cross promotion
opportunities with the ULHRA circuit. As a Series Partner we can more
effectively support sales in those areas, while enjoying our love of
racing.”
“Power Punch is a great example of the type of sponsor partner the ULHRA
is looking for,” said Joe Frauenheim, President of the ULHRA. “They got
involved at an affordable level and as they learned how to make the
format work for them, they were able to increase their investment. We
are very pleased to see Power Punch join the ranks of Series Partners. I
have had the opportunity to get well acquainted with Pete Morey and I
know that he shares the same vision of growth with the ULHRA.”
The 2010 Unlimited Light Hydroplane Racing season kicks off in Phoenix,
Arizona this year on May 1-2. Following Phoenix, the Lights will make
the journey to Chamberlain-Oacoma, South Dakota on June 19 & 20, head
back west for the Atomic Cup in Tri-Cities, Washington on July 23-25 and
the Graham Trucking Cup at Seafair August 6-8. The season's final two
stops will be August 21-22 in Polson, Montana and San Diego September
17-19.
As a Series Partner, every hydroplane on the circuit will display a
Power Punch logo on their “tails.” Tails, the vertical stabilizers
attached to the rear or transom of the boats are a distinguishing
feature of the Unlimited Light hydroplane class. Power Punch had already
renewed its participation in the Contingency Awards Program for 2010 and
has plans to continue sponsorship of individual racing teams. This
recent move makes Power Punch one of the most dominant sponsors in
marine motorsports today.

GETTING THE MESSAGE
NW
Radio not only gets it - but
sends it!
As the
driver’s shoulders rock back and forth in concert with each sponson
bounding from side to side, he reaches up over head and flicks the
switch for the strobe light. Attached to the top of his canopy, it
begins blinking as the boat comes out of the corner.
Back in
the radio corral, high ab
ove
the crews and spectators in the hot pit area, the official in the purple
shirt nods to the team’s radio person. He reaches up to his ear phones
and depresses a buttoned switch saying, “You can turn the strobe light
off now.”
What just
happened has impacted two of the most vital aspects of the ULHRA safety
program: mandatory use of a strobe light in all Unlimited Light class
hydroplanes, and effective function of a radio system. With race craft
reaching speeds in excess of 150mph on the water and visibility from the
cockpit sometimes a serious concern, these two features must be
maintained on a constant basis.
Recently a
situation occurred at another organization’s race which doesn’t require
radios. A boat had lost power and come to a stop at a particularly
unsafe location on the race course. Compounding the matter, the
hydroplane’s particular paint scheme made it hard to see on the water,
resulting in a serious collision. A radio person on shore may have
averted a life-threatening accident.
Cases
exist where a strobe light works perfectly in the pits on the trailer,
but routinely fails on the race course. If the problem persists on the
Unlimited Light Hydroplane Racing Association’s circuit, it could result
in the levying of a penalty. Random testing is the only way to maintain
a conscientious level of reliability. Another way to help maintain that
reliability is to purchase quality equipment in the first place.
“Motorola is among the brands we feature,” said Don Cameron of NW Radio.
“Its reliability has become the standard that many companies emulate.”
Based in
Houston, Texas, NW Radio is one of the latest sponsors in the ULHRA
Contingency Awards Program to recognize the marketing potential of
marine motorsports. “Not only does the ULHRA circuit provide a broad
platform for promoting our products,” said Cameron, “but at the same
time our equipment provides a very real service toward the safety
needs.”
“The
tagline in one of their magazine ads reads ‘Good radio communication
is no accident’ and in the application of NW Radio equipment
on the 2010 circuit, that couldn't be more appropriate” said Joe
Frauenheim, President of the ULHRA.
Also
featuring equipment manufactured by Kenwood, NW Radio is no stranger to
motorsports sponsorship. NW Radio initiated its participation with a
foray into the American Drag Racing League. For more information about
