Nordskog Instruments. ULHRA Contingency Sponsor
The newest member of the ULHRA Contingency Sponsor "family" is Nordskog Instruments: The name Nordskog has a great history in marine motorsports. Originally, the Nordskog Competition Center was launched more than 30 years ago by aerospace expert and famous offshore racer Bob "Ironman" Nordskog. His company, Nordskog Industries, built airplane galleys and other products for the aviation industry. Like so many innovators, what got the "Ironman" involved in the marine manufacturing industry was what he couldn't find on the market......so he built his own. It was called the Speed-O-Meter. The marine speed measurement gauge was Pitot tube driven for accuracy in race boats.....a feature that was uncommon in marine motorsports at the time. Nordskog was a legend in racing and famous for doing it all himself. He set ocean endurance speed records at an age when most of us are retired. In fact, Bob Nordskog was racing just a month before he died at the age of 79. During a 43 year career he earned 162 checkered flags and set 50 speed records in six different boat racing disciplines. He also founded what is now Nordskog Performance Products which specializes in ultra high performance instruments, including their GPS Speedometer. The GPS Speedometer is a hallmark of the company. Several different versions are manufactured by Nordskog for both marine and land uses. Here in ULHRA, 3 time Unlimited Light Hydroplane Racing Series champions, Hopp Racing, use the GPS Speedometer. It is "radar gun" accurate since it uses GPS satellite technology; doing away with the spinner wheel and pitot tube versions of speed measurement. This patented system requires no calibration or resetting, and in a sport where weight and drag are key elements to avoid, it weighs just a pound and involves no water pickup off the rudder. There are two styles: Analog with a traditional needle, and Digital. With the digital version there is a large LCD display and you can toggle between GPS speed, RPM (tachometer), voltage measurement and compass heading. Recently this technology was introduced to the automotive aftermarket and has become highly popular in Offroad racing, as well as with custom car and street machine enthusiasts, and custom motorcycle manufacturers. Bob Nordskog's vision of producing the most accurate, most reliable marine gauge on the planet still holds true today. Nordskog Gauges and Instruments have been used to set numerous speed records, endurance records and Kilo straightaway records while being tested and retested on some of the world's most demanding boats. Every gauge produced by Nordskog Instruments goes through no less than 5 quality control checkpoints before being released, and all are backed by a limited lifetime warranty. Something else the company does; they realize in order to set records and win on the water, one has to get to the water. So they make a variety of measurement products for tow vehicles, SUV's, and 18 wheelers including transmission temperature, boost pressure, exhaust gas temperature, and fuel pressure. Those that use these tools from Nordskog learn quickly if and when something deviates from factory specifications before severe damage occurs so the vehicle operator can avoid costly repairs and lengthy, expensive "down time". Lighter than LIGHTS at Tri Cities? YES!
Former limited inboard record holder and one time Unlimited driver Michael Eacrett debuted the long awaited G-24. It arrived with a spectacular paint scheme and very interesting lines. Eacrett went on the lake for a brief shake down cruise in the morning and followed with a quicker run in the afternoon. This craft has been revamped from its original Ron Jones Jr design by former Miss Budweiser Crew Chief Ron Brown. The cowling features an air scoop reminiscent of those used on Pro Stock drag racing cars. Eacrett, driving for G-24 Racing LLC, will compete on the entire American Challenge Cup Series in 2006. Eacrett was joined by Dick Lynch driving the G-13 Tempo. Lynch made two runs in the craft, the first all new ACCS hydroplane ever built. It was completed in about 6 months last year by designer-builder Da le Van Wierengen and the G-13 crew from Impact Racing. The test day marked the debut in an Unlimited Light of 2005 Lighter than LIGHTS Modified champion Bob Estes in the UL-33 Miss Graham Trucking. Bob and Janet Estes purchased this craft from Milton and Charley Wiggins of Alabama which was campaigned for several years as the UL-10 and driven to victory at Seattle in 2003 by Cal Phipps. Estes made one run, and his backup driver Mark Echols also made a run. Echols will man the radio for Estes in 2006, following a trend popularized by Hopp Racing of having an experienced race driver on the radio assisting the team driver. For Hopp Racing, having Jerry & Greg Hopp on both ends of the radio has served them well for 3 consecutive Unlimited Lights championships. Greg Hopp and the Mike's Hard Lemonade Team was also on hand testing their newly acquired hull; the former UL-9 American Eagle. The Eagle paint remains for the moment but will be replaced with a Mike's paint scheme in time for the season opener, June 10 & 11 at Issaquah WA. The 3 time champion hull will be held in reserve. Also on hand was 2.5 Modified World Champion Dustin Echols and Tim Holman testing two hulls that will compete in the Lighter than LIGHTS series in 2006 in preparation for that team's entry into Unlimited Lights competition with a brand new UL hull in 2007. Jeff Bernard and Brian Perkins were also on hand, testing one of the Perkins Racing LTL entries. Perkins will also take the wheel of Thunder Valley Racing's UL-40 Miss Red Dot Corp. The UL-40 was not on hand for testing as off-season hull updates are not quite complete. The team will be dyno testing their engine program on April 20th. Only one boat was unsuccessful in getting on the water. The G-329 Baker Equipment entry driven by co-owner David Warren just installed their recently upgraded engine yesterday. Despite great effort the team was not able to test today but will be ready for Spring Training, May 20th at Tri Cities WA. When complete it will sport a different paint scheme than last year. Much taller rear wings were a noticeable change from last season. The G-17 Miss Ted's Red Apple Market owned by Rick & Shawn Bridgeman, and the G-10 High Pressure of Milton and Charley Wiggins were not on hand for this first test. The G-17 is awaiting delivery of new cockpit glass that was lost in shipping, while the Wiggins team is home ported in Alabama.........inconveniently located for a test in suburban Seattle. They intend to test prior to Spring Training while the Rick & Shawn Bridgeman owned G-17 team.....the first team to enter the ACCS program, merely hope to get usable cockpit glass in time to test. After last year's all too brief appearance that ended in a flip at Tri Cities, co-owner/driver Rick Bridgeman is really looking forward to getting back in competition this year both with the G-17 and their all new Ron Jones Jr UL-17 hull that is being rapidly assembled at Jones' Pacific WA facility. The new UL-17 was started in January and according to Jones will surprise the naysayers by being ready for Spring Training next month, and the season opener, Tastin n Racin, June 10 & 11. John Lynch "Voice" of the Unlimited Lights, American Challenge Cup Series, and Lighter than LIGHTS Muncey Marketing announces new sponsorship and a "professional" element for Lighter than LIGHTS teams at "Tastin n Racin". Limited Hydroplane Racing Turns Professional The top two UL teams from 2003, 2004 & 2005 joined forces to entertain at the Snohomish WA Easter Parade on April 15th. Jerry Hopp rides atop the defending UL National Champion Mike's Hard Lemonade, while runner up Michael Flaherty rides with the Miss Boat Electric. Among other parade entertainers were the Seafair Pirates at this annual and well attended parade. Maintenance of your steering systems ALL BOAT RACERS The two photos are from one of our Unlimited Light boats showing the steering quadrant and the mounting brackets with bearings, please note the amount of corrosion that is present. In addition, several of the steering pulleys were rusted to the point were they did not turn on the bearings but on the mounting bolt, PLEASE PLEASE check your steering systems. Everybody should pull the steering cables, check for fraying, kinks, clearances in the hull holes, check the end swages and clamps. Look at all the pulleys, bearings and bushings, look at the quadrant, its mounting and anything else that helps you go left. Please do it now, not after it breaks or you go on your head. Peter Thomson Shockwave Racing update.
Work continues at Ron Jones Jr's. Composite Laminate Specialties (CLS) in Pacific WA on the brand new UL-17 of Shockwave Racing; the team owned and operated by Rick & Shawn Bridgeman of Olympia WA. This season the Bridgeman's return to Unlimited Lights racing after becoming the first team to join the American Challenge Cup Series with their G-17. The ACCS boat was damaged in a flip at Tri Cities in July 2005. Repairs are nearly complete at Shockwave Racing's shop.
The team plans to campaign both craft in 2006. The G-17 will be at Spring Training, 2006 at Tri Cities WA on May 20th. It's possible the UL-17 may also debut at Spring Training. The team's goal is to compete with the UL-17 at the season opener, Tastin n Racin at Issaquah WA on Lake Sammamish, June 10 & 11. If the team is able to compete at Tastin n Racin with the new UL-17 it would mark the quickest construction of an Unlimited Light hydroplane.
Follow the work progress on both boats here on the team's website photo gallery.
