Speedvision Tastin' n Racin' dates
We've received some initial information about our Speedvision Broadcast of the upcoming race at Lake Sammamish.  The first three showing are as follows;

Sunday July 15 1:00 PM
Wednesday July 18 1:00 PM
Saturday July 22 3:00 PM

All Times are Eastern.  This will be a one hour show similar to last years with the Unlimited Lights as the feature and additional coverage of the race site and support classes.  It should be a great weekend of racing!

Tastin' n Racin' Regatta ...  June 2 - 3, 2001!
A update from the event to the teams...

Last year at Tastin' n Racin' the crowds on race day were estimated by the Washington Park Dept. as being in excess of 50,000.  Racing will be on both Saturday and Sunday for the classes that can support two days of racing.  It is expected that KZOK and their publicity will bring the even larger crowds, and for these reasons we are looking for this event to be a real success and request the following:

Boats be in place and tow vehicles removed by 9:30am on race day.  GATES CLOSE AT 9:35AM SHARP! PLEASE HAVE YOUR BOATS IN THE PITS FRIDAY IF AT ALL POSSIBLE
Watch road signs to get into the pits - follow their instructions!
Race gear trucks will be allowed near pits – one per team.
One vehicle per race team is allowed in the Sunset Beach (Main) parking lot. That’s the northeast end. All other cars will be parked in the soccer field or the first lot. Please take only one parking space. Please save the rest of the parking for our fans.
We will have three cranes.
Boats will remain in place until 7:00pm Sunday. Only the race chairman can authorize exceptions to this rule and for out of town guests leaving directly from the pits for home or their next race site will get authorization. Please notify race chairman minimum one-week prior to the race and on race day prior to entering the pits.
ALL TEAMS ARE INVITED TO HYDRO HAPPY HOUR TO MEET WITH FANS AND MEDIA.  It will take place on Friday, June 1st, 4p - 8p at the beer garden.

The Tastin' n Racin' festival operates from 11am until 7pm.  The main park gates open to the public at 8am and the anticipated attendance is 65,000.  Visitors to the park often arrive before 10am therefore, the State Park requires that the access road be closed from 9:30am until 7:00pm to prevent possible accidents.  The road will run one way, with a temporary exit road running next to the beer garden like last year.  Park rangers will issue fines if you leave using other means than the exit road.

ALL APBA PIT PASS RULES WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED – if you don’t know the rules, read them. There will be no exceptions.  Each boat will be given 5 free pass vouchers, but remember crew members MUST be members of the APBA with current cards or they are buying a pass. (Rule 15, #1a & 4, page 25 in APBA Rules book).

SpeedVision will be once again filming the racing.  We are encouraging them to give the most exciting racing more airtime.  Last years show was aired again 3 weeks ago.

Driver’s autograph session will again be mid afternoon (between heats) on both days.  It is a real hit and fun for both drivers and fans.  You will be notified of time on race day.  Please attend this very important part of our event!

Boat Racer’s Breakfast will be available at Sunset Beach main concessions stand from 7-10:30am on both days.  Beginning at 11am, you will have the opportunity to choose from a wide array of mouth-watering delights from the 17 food booths.  On Sunday after racing, there will be the awards ceremony at the main stage over by the beer garden.  Musical entertainment will be provided at the main stage up until awards time.  Lets make it a hit like last year’s.

We do appreciate your cooperation.  Boat racing is show business, so lets give them a show!  The benefits will come to you, the racer, in the long run.  The more race fans that discover our sport and the better the show is, the greater the odds are of you landing that sponsor.  We are trying very hard to have our event viewed by the public as ‘Seafair’ at Lake Sammamish!

If you have any special needs please call co-chairman Jon (JC) Courtright or e-mail kenck@cris.com or Kelly Stocklin kstockli@zetec.com.

Introducing the Hopp Racing Team's "Freddie's Club Lite"
The Hopp Racing Team (http://home1.gte.net/hoppster/) is proud to announce that Freddie's Club Casino has signed on as its 2001 Unlimited Light and Grand National Hydroplane sponsor for all Pacific Northwest races.

This is the fourth year that Freddie's Club (http://www.freddiesclub.com/) has stepped forward to sponsor Unlimited and Unlimited Light Hydroplanes.  The partnership with Hopp Racing is in addition to the Club's sponsorship of the U-10 USA Racing Partners Unlimited Hydroplane for the Tri-Cities and Seattle races.  The U-10 will run under the name of "Diamond Lil's", which is the name of Freddie's Club's founder Fred Steiner's first establishment in Renton, WA.

"We at Team Freddie's realize that we have set the bar so high in regards to our business and how we promote our product, that we are honored to be in partnership with what we consider, and the many race fans that follow the sport do also, not one, but two of the finest racing teams in the sport that have also set the bar just as high in their respective classes. We are proud to have them aboard, and look forward to a outstanding season with them," says Rick Davis, head of Internal Operations/ Marketing and Promotions for Freddie's Club.

According to Davis the decision to extend a hand to The Hopp Racing Team wasn't a difficult one.

"I asked Kim (Gregory, of the USA Racing Partners) during a dinner meeting about who is a good honest blue collar light race team, he gave me a short list of names," says Davis. "I bounced them off of another friend of mine to see who was available on the list and before I could get a answer from him, Randy Hoyle [Hopp Racing Team] approached me about a deal involving the UL-15 and Hopp racing."

Both teams will be involved in various displays and events throughout the region this summer. To carry on a philanthropic tradition, Freddie's Club will raise money for Children's Orthopedic Hospital primarily through the U-10 team. A limited edition "Freddie Bear" is currently in production to be available for a minimum donation of $10.

Already one of the strongest teams in Unlimited Light and Grand National Hydroplane racing, owners Jerry and Greg Hopp have increased their chances of winning the 2001 season championship by acquiring the former UL-16 ALAMO boat.

Fans of the Unlimited Lights know the UL-16 as the three-time champion of the circuit. The boat, formerly owned by Ned Allen and driven numerous times to victory by Bo Schide, was not campaigned in the 2000 season after the team retired.

From The Desk Of The Canada1 Minister Of Propaganda...
The latest on this weekend's UL-14/Canada1 test session!

26 May 2001

Oh Yeah baby!!!!!!

The Jacobsen Excellence Canada1 Unlimited Light Hydroplane took to the water this morning under clear sunny skies, with a light breeze on Lake Okanagan in Kelowna, BC

The first run was a shake down cruise on lap three, approaching the bottom turn a power lead to the fuel pump came undone, the Canada1 crew led by rookie crew chief Tony Triechel quickly found the problem and immediately spun the boat back on the course to complete the first run.

Upon returning to the dock Canada1 driver Mike McLellan had this to say, "Tony & JD we're right on the money fixing the problem. We were discussing it on the radio as we were being towed in and they had us fixed and running before I could get my helmet off."

There was a one hour break between runs as the crew did the turn around on the boat for the second run. Mike was kept busy with interviews for two different TV stations, two newspapers, 3 radio stations and www.castanet.net who were on hand covering this mornings test.

The second run was a simulated heat complete with the 10 to the 5. Mike went to pull away at 5:15 -nothing, no power to the starter. Again the crew dove in found the problem and had Mike away with 3:47 still on the clock. the second run was flawless from there. Good speed, nice water everything went well.

Spirits were high when the boat returned to the dock the crew had the Champagne bath ready for their driver as he stepped off the boat with an ear to ear grin.

Mike McLellan- "We've taken some flack in the past couple of weeks in the media for having such an inexperienced crew but, they proved today that they were more than up to the task. I am really proud of them. I can't thank everyone that has gotten us this far enough, Jacobsen Excellence, Campion Marine, Gwill Industries, Kelowna Speedway and Hobby, Knock out Signs, and Ogopogo1@home.com couldn't have done it without them."

Far and away the biggest smile on the beach was Canada1 owner Doug McIntosh "I am so happy with all of these guys. they have been under a lot of pressure for the past six weeks to meet deadlines and perform and they've done it! said McIntosh on the dock after the second run, " Tony and the guys we're great, Mike looked very comfortable back in that boat, I am really pleased".

Next stop for the Canada1 in Tastin' N Racin' next weekend at Issaqua.  Stay tuned to www.unlimitedlights.com for more Canada1 testing coverage as it becomes available.

All the latest on the  coming weekend's Canada1 test!
Late last week, the Canada1 team announced that "they will be testing The Jacobsen Excellence Unlimited Light Hydroplane on Saturday May 26th at Okanagan Lake in Kelowna, BC."

Driver Mike McLellan described the upcoming test saying "I am so excited to get back in a boat.  After everything we've been through in the past couple of weeks it's gonna be great.  I can't thank Doug McIntosh enough for the opportunity to race this year.  Tony and the guys have been working real hard they've earned this more than anyone.  All of our hats have to go off to everyone at Hopp Racing though. Those guys are thrashing to get their new boat ready and they dropped everything last weekend to get the engine and shaft into our boat. They are the greatest.  The window for testing is from 9:00am to 11:30am off of city park.  It's going to be great for the fans."

In an update last night...

"The test is scheduled to go this Saturday.  The Pit location has been moved from city park to the westside.  This move was necessitated after insurance problems with the city.  Canada1 wishes to extend a special thanks to Jerry Hopp who is making the trip north to offer assistance as the Canada1 crew shakes down their new ride."

"Pre test media coverage is scheduled to include SHAW-TV, CHBC-TV, as well Canada1 driver Mike McLellan is scheduled to guest on Sun-FM's morning show Friday morning at 8:30 with Greg, Rae, & John. Local radio coverage is also coming from 1130 The Bullit, Power 104, CKOV 630, and 101 SILK FM.  On location on test day will be CHBC-TV, SHAW-TV, and live test day coverage on 99.9 SUN-FM.  Stay tuned to www.unlimitedlights.com for continuing test coverage."

A note from the Hogan Racing Team!
Greetings to all!

Just a quick Hello from the Hogan Racing team!  We wanted everyone to know we are here!  Our team and family has increased this winter; John and Christine are expecting a new brother or sister for Andrew any day now!  Lori is the newest member to the Brow family when Doug and Lori married last Thanksgiving.  Doug’s son Tyler has been living in Friday Harbor with Doug and Lori and is enjoying the island life.  Tyler doesn’t know yet, but one of his new jobs during racing will probably be babysitting duty for the Hogan family!

Our 2001 team consists of owners John, Christine, Andrew and new baby Hogan; The Brow Family – Fay (Mother in Charge) Doug, (Driver et al), Lori (Head wife in charge) Tyler, (known by all - -definition not necessary!) Noonie (Doug’s Sister and President of the Doug Brow Fan Club) her husband Mike (Mechanic and Jack-of-all-Trades); Shannon Plummer (Mechanic and big "Teddy Bear" as Fay calls him!) Toni O’Brad, (she is Shannon’s "Little Bear"!); Mike Copas (Mechanic and . . . by the way, has anyone seen Mike?! ) Michelle Novak (Photographer and PR always has camera in hand) and John Links and son John Jr. (Mechanic and all round great guys).  We would also like to include both Phil Shelly and Randy Rae for Tech Support.  We appreciate all their help.

The team has been hard at work this winter, getting the boat race ready.  We want to thank all of our racing friends and sponsors for their support and loyalty in 2000. We had fun last year, but this year will be awesome!!

Thank you again and we’ll see you June 2nd and 3rd for Tasting and Racing at Lake Sammamish!  Watch for updates and photos!

Looking ahead to Detroit!
We're jumping ahead a few races to this year's Detroit Automotive Gold Cup event, but we have new information to share.  After the Valleyfield race (July 6th - 8th), the ULHRA fleet will take July 9th to travel from Canada to Detroit.  On Tuesday morning, a select group of boats have an appointment with "the Vinyl Guy" to put together the look for the seven Restaurant boats.  These will be seven Unlimited Lights that are sponsored and themed after local restaurants.  A great new promotion put together for the UL's this year.

Following the detailing, the boats and trucks go to their restaurants for displays on Tuesday and Wednesday night.  On Thursday the seven will rejoin the full fleet as it makes its way to the pits for media day.

The seven boats will run their heats together while the rest of the fleet makes up alternate flights.  The eight boat final will run as usual by points earned in heats.  The Automotive Gold Cup, a stand alone event, will be run at 5:00 PM, Friday afternoon.  The five boats with the highest points from last year are automatically seeded and Jim Garza will choose the other three boats.

This is a great promotion the Detroit organizers are setting up for us and we hope to see the concept expanded in 2002!  Competition between the restaurants as part of this promotion is expected to be fierce.

An Unlimited Light sponsor reopens its doors!
Hinkle's Sandwich Shop, last year's sponsor of Joe Marshall's UL-33, has reopened it's doors in Madison, Indiana.  As some of you may remember, the fan favorite sandwich shop was forced to close after a fire ravaged the business late last year.  We would like to take a moment and congratulate the business for raising, literally, from the ashes and reopening its doors.

Our thanks are offered to Denny Jackson, driver of the UL-33, who shared the welcome news.
