UL-49 and UL-17 updates!
Thanks to an update from Doug McIntosh, we've learned that the UL-49 Hook Racing Team has secured a new sponsor for this weekend's Tastin' n Racin' event in Issaquah, WA!  Lake Pateros Motor Inn has joined the team for the event!  Prospects look good that they will continue their relationship with Steve Hook and his team for at least two additional races this season.

Also, Doug announced earlier today that the UL-17 Ted's Red Apple Markets has repaired it's damage from Lake Havasu and is ready to race this weekend.  Great news!

Rick Bridgeman, driver of the UL-17, was excited about the team's prospects for the season following Lake Havasu.  During the race weekend, the team resolved an engine problem that had plagued them when running as a UL.

For more on both teams and quotes from the drivers, be sure to visit MMS News.

Father and son set to race in Issaquah!
Jerry Hopp, regular driver of the UL-15 Graham Trucking, will be joined by his son Greg Hopp this weekend as they take the UL-15 to the water in Tastin' n Racin' in Issaquah, Washington.  Greg is traditionally behind the wheel of Fred Leland's U-100 Project X, but has a a unique opportunity to share driving duties with his father as the lights are running alone in Issaquah.

Doug McIntosh's news page is reporting that the damage suffered in Lake Havasu has been repaired and the team is ready to race!  Outstanding news.  For more on this story, be sure to visit Doug's news page at http://www.seanet.com/~mms/news.htm.  Doug has been working with Tastin' n Racin' to promote the event and should have a ton of race details throughout the upcoming weekend.

...  doing it again!
First they brought you the pre-season interview show, next they were the first to talk live with Phil Bononcini following his win at Lake Havasu's Mohave Unlimited Hydrofest.  Now, Madison's WORX 96.7 will broadcast a special show dedicated to next weekend's Tastin' n Racin' event in Issaquah, Washington!  The special ninety minute show will take place on Sunday, June 4th starting at 5:00 PM EST (Madison time) and 3:00 PM PST (Tastin' n Racin' time).

ULRS Commissioner Particia M. Darling looks back on the Mohave Unlimited Hydrofest...
"Overall, I believe this was a good weekend for the Unlimited Lights. With two very last minute cancellations (John Hogan's UL 3 hull was damaged leaving it inoperable after at the Western Divisionals and Scott McGregor ... UL 102 ... was busy attending to a crisis at home) we were able to field seven Unlimited Lights.

Lake Havasu was rather tough on our boats and we sustained hull damage to the UL 110, UL 23 and UL 15, while UL 17 blew a motor (valve).  The very good news is that UL 110 was able to repair their boat in time to run.  Also the UL 49 and Steve Hook received great assistance from other camps to manage a better showing with each heat.  Jerry Hopp and the UL 15 also had some problems with their truck, but were able to begin racking up National High Points. The Bridgemans report that they were able to diagnose an old problem during Lake Havasu and are ready to run at Tastin' n Racin' .

We saw some fine competition, and Phil Bononcini and team won their first ever race. Dick and Shirley Sanders are anxiously awaiting their Ron Jones, Sr. delivery and Chip Reiter is hoping to join us at San Diego.

So----all in all, it was a weekend. Our teams stayed at the River Palms Casino and really enjoyed the nice rooms, inexpensive and very good food and had fun in the casino as well. Yes, it was hot, but some forgot that as the Playboy gals passed by in the Pits. They are a new sponsor for the UHRA and welcomed by all.

I salute all the teams who made the effort to come to Lake Havasu, and I look to greeting even more at Tastin' N Racin' next weekend."

We hope you enjoyed our Lake Havasu coverage.  Today, we'll have two additional updates as we wrap up our coverage.  The first update was just added.  Starting tomorrow we'll begin shifting our focus toward the upcoming Tastin' N Racin' event in Issaquah, Washington.  It's only twelve days away!

A new radio controlled Unlimited Light makes the cover of RC Boat Modeler!
Andy Kunz recently released a new UL model based on the former UL-125.  A review of the model followed and the critics liked it so much, it made cover of an upcoming issue of RC Boat Modeler!  The cover and article will turn up in the August 2000 issue and shows the UL-125 running flat out on the water.  The review also includes a two-page centerfold featuring the hull.

You can learn more about all of Andy's RC models at RC-Hydros.com!

UL-23 Miss River Palms!
Bob Larimore announced today on the UL-23 Team Pegasus website...

"We are running as the 'Miss River Palms' at Havasu and wish to thank Nancy Novak and all the great people there for their help.  We hope they all have a great time at the race and we're proud and honored to represent them."

Click here for a full text and photo update on the team as they hit the road for this weekend's race!

A new recruiting committee forms...
A new recruiting committee has been created within the ULRS!  The committee will be headed by UL-72 Pocket Mechanic driver Phil Bononcini and is designed to promote growth within the series and enhance overall race attendance.  We have a lot of teams joining the fleet and even more hoping to make their way into our ranks in the years ahead.  This transition is sometimes more than just a technical process.  Phil will remain in contact with teams and work with them to ensure a steady growth within the series.

UL-33 announces a new sponsorship!
UL-33 The Tennessean
owner Joe Marshall and driver Denny Jackson are pleased to announce the addition of a new sponsor for the team.  Hinkles Sandwich Shop will join the UL-33 as they race this season.  The sponsor was on board with the team for both the Madison and Evansville races, but the loss of Evansville forced the team to redirect their focus on Madison.

Speaking with Denny Jackson, we've learned that the former UL-33 was recently sold and the hull the team plans to race is the former Kat-N-Nan hull.  The team is preparing to add a new canopy and air system so the hull will comply with current UL specifications.

The team hopes to test before driver Denny Jackson leaves for Europe.  Denny works as a teacher in Vevay, Indiana, Switzerland County High School and takes a group of kids on a European tour annually.

Commenting on his recent chance to return to racing, Denny told us, "I didn't realize how much I missed it."  Denny also credited UHRA historian Fred Farley with uniting the team with their new sponsor.

Further plans beyond Madison are uncertain at this time, but we wish the team well as they prepare to get out on the water again this year.

Transcripts from the recent WORX show are now available on-line!
Charley Wiggins, driver of the UL-10 Earl's Performance Products and the U-6 Miss Madison, was recently interviewed on WORX 96.7 FM.  The U-6 was the focus of the show, but there was quite a bit of UL talk during the broadcast.  Now, you can read the transcript on the U-6 Miss Madison site.

Western Divisionals coverage begins!
Although not an official Unlimited Light event, we do have a few teams planning to attend this great weekend of racing.  As such, we thought it might be fun to cover the action as a pre-season warm-up presenting results, news and photos over the weekend.  We're lucky enough to have a couple ULRS "correspondents" heading for the event, so we should have several updates on the action.  You can keep an eye on the action all weekend by pointing your browser to www.ulrs.org/results/westdiv00.htm.

You might ask how are the Unlimited Lights involved in the action?  An Invitational Grand Prix race will include National Mods, Grand National, Grand Prix and Unlimited Lights to be run in conjunction with the other divisions.  One heat will be run on Saturday and one heat Sunday!

For additional information on the race and a bit of background on this weekend's action, be sure to visit Doug McIntosh's Western Divisionals Site

Issaquah gets behind the upcoming event...
We may only be a little under two weeks from the upcoming Lake Havasu race, but excitement is also building in Issaquah, Washington.  There, Mayor Ava Fresinger has officially proclaimed June 3-4 to be Tastin' N Racin' Days in Issaquah.

Since this is the first time that the Lights will race on the Issaquah course, it's a fresh chance to set course records.  The city is showing their enthusiasm by setting up a reader board that will record Unlimited Light records set on the Tastin' N Racin' course.  This reader board will remain up all year long!

Powerboat Magazine...

Be sure to pick up a copy of the May, 2000 issue of Powerboat Magazine!  There's a two page photo of Bob Larimore's UL-23 Pegasus that is simply amazing.  The boat is completely up out of the water on a hop with a wall of spray filling the background.   It's an amazing shot.  The boat is perfectly flat above the water. The photo was taken by F. Pierce Williams in the "Roostertail Turn" at Detroit during the 1999 race. (Page 16-17 under the section title - "Hot Shot")

Also, starting on page 92 there's a five page Unlimited Preview for the 2000 season.  Toward the end of the Preview, the Unlimited Lights have two paragraphs mentioning the series and briefly reflecting on the the team titles.  Both Bo Schide (UL-16 Alamo) and Charley Wiggins (UL-10 Earl's Perforamce Products) get a congratulatory nod.

APBA Propeller Magazine...

The series received good press in last month's April issue of the APBA Propeller Magazine.  Stories on the the upcoming Lake Sammamish race, Paul Droullard's (UL-9) maiden season dedication to Unlimited Hydroplane pioneer Ted Jones and the Haas (UL-110) purchase of the Alamo can be found in the issue.  Be sure to visit the APBA website where you will find an online version of portions of Propeller Magazine.
