I have a 1996 Four Winns 214 Funship with a Volvo Penta drive. The problem I'm having is that when I shift into reverse it goes forward and when I shift into neutral it goes forward. Forward works fine. Any help would be appreciated greatly. Actuating the throttle control forward or reverse doesn't show movement in the stern drive shift mechanism.

Sorry if this isn't the right place or way to ask this question.

Have you changed cables recently? My first guess is that the shift cable has been attached to (or jumped out of its connection and jamming to) the throttle lever in the control box.

Was if working well before? If so, what changes or repairs were made?

thank you for the question. Problem just started. Everything worked fine before. All I've done so far was to take the cover off the outdrive to verify that the shifter wasn't moving with the shifter as it normally would.

Thank you for responding. Haven't changed the cable since we bought the boat in 1996. First time that this has occured.

First check the control box. If the end of the shift cable comes out of its lever arm (as indicated in my previous post), there is big chance that it jams to the throttle lever and follows its movements instead of the shift arm. Your stuff is now 28 years old at a minimum; the little pins connecting the cable ends to the control do wear and eventually may tear off. I'd guess nobody has worried about lubricating the equipment during these years??
