Detroit 1997MARK WEBER WINS UNLIMITED LIGHT
|
| DETROIT -- Veteran seven-liter pilot Mark Weber of St. Clair Shores, Mich., hit a perfect start and went on to easily win the Unlimited Light Racing Series season opener as part of the support show for the Chrysler Jeep APBA Gold Cup. Bo Schide of Dayton, Ohio, making his return to competitive boat racing after a four-year absence, finished second, after dueling with ULRS rookie of the year Dennis Macy in the early going. Macy, however, was assessed a pair of one-minute penalties for course violations and thus missed out on a podium finish. |

| This was suppose to be a
handicapped race between the Unlimited Lights and the Grand Prix
Hydroplanes, but instead this wound up a ULRS-only event.
The Grand Prix boats refused to go on the water, greatly irritating the Spirit Of Detroit Thunderfest organizers, and the ULRS quartet -- which easily could have been eight Lights with a little advance notice -- put on a rousing display of racing in some fairly rough water. Next year, someone said, it'll be JUST Lights in the Automotive Gold Cup. |
