Sunday, 2:48 PM - Phil Bononcini and the UL-72 Budweiser/Pocket Mechanic team win Detroit! In the final, we had a battle royal between Phil Bononcini in the U-72 Budweiser/Pocket Mechanic and Cal Phipps in the UL-10 Post Bar. The Wiggins Racing Team's return to the Unlimited Lights was clearly a strong one as the battle for first in the final was immediate and harkened back to the side-by-side solid racing of the UL-10's former pilot, Charley Wiggins. Cal Phipps can drive and was right there with Bonocini forcing him to hold every turn and they were jumping turns as the two battled. Randy Haas and the UL-110 was in the hunt, but couldn't catch the front runners. Behind the UL-110, there was a fierce battle for fourth between the UL-929, the UL-38 and the UL-15. In the end, the UL-38 would pass the UL-929 and the UL-15 would fade back into the pack. A great, fan pleasing race! Congratulation to the UL-72 team and welcome back Wiggins Racing!! Sunday, 2:29 PM - Your unofficial finish for the final... 1st - UL-72 Budweiser/Pocket Mechanic Sunday, 11:45 AM - In the final we will see the UL-10, UL-19, UL-38, UL-58, UL-72, UL-110, UL-929. Sunday, 10:17 AM - In Heat 2A, Steve Hook in the UL-19 had the early lead, but was constantly challenged by Pingree Conflitti in the Spirit of Coeur d'Alene. Ping has had his rough moments this weekend. In Heat 1A, he lost a prop which took him out of the running. Today, the story would be completely different as Ping was able to overtake Hook for the lead and win the heat. The fleet was unusually plagued with trouble this time out. Jerry Hopp's UL-15 simply couldn't seem to get any power. As he's said, they are still dialing in the new engine. The UL-102 and the UL-25 did make it out, but couldn't finish. In Heat 2B, there was an early duel between the UL-72 and the UL-38, but tight turns by Phil Bononcini and the UL-72 Budweiser/Pocket Mechanic would give him the advantage over Dave Bender in the UL-38. The UL-444 added an extra bit of excitement to the heat as he went down in turn two and slowly drifted into the turn as the final two laps were run. One wide turn by the UL-38 almost stopped the heat as the two boats were close. Randy Haas' front running UL-110 Beach Grille had some obvious problems this time out. He could barely remain on plane and had to return to the pits. The UL-23 went down during the run as well. Superstores Detroit APBA Gold Cup Randy Haas and the UL-110 Beach Grille win the Automotive Gold Cup!
The Gold Cup was an outstanding race to watch! At the start, the UL-110, the UL-15, the UL-23 and the UL-38 were solid on the line and formed a wall the the UL-72 could not penetrate. Having no place to go for position, he pulled back at the start/finish and didn't make up the distance during the five lap Automotive Gold Cup race. The UL-38 popped out around the outside and took the lead out of the first turn with UL-23, UL-110 and UL-15 right there. By the time the group came out of turn 2, it was the UL-110 taking the lead and which he wouldn't surrender. UL-38 and UL-15 continued to duel until the end, with UL-38 taking second place. UL-23 had a very rough boat ride and UL-72 was able to overtake him. Right behind the UL-72 was a solid running UL-929. UL-40 and UL-58 dueled until the UL-40 pulled back into the pits prior to the end of the race. Saturday, 5:23 PM - Unofficial results of the 2002 Automotive Gold Cup - Randy Haas takes the win! 1st - UL 110 Beach Grille Chrysler/Jeep

Saturday, 3:39 PM - Hopp was running the engine rich in the heat and kept cutting out as he hit the gas. They're going the other direction to correct the situation for the Gold Cup. Saturday, 3:39 PM - In Heat 1B, it was the UL-110 right from the start leading the heat. The racing was solid as you look at the rest of the field. JW Myers new engine is treating him well! His UL-23 Emerald Ballroom was running a strong second but a hard charging UL-40 Roostertail and a fast UL-10 Post Bar would threaten that spot. In the second turn of the second lap, the UL-40, UL-23 and UL-10 hit the curve almost in unison. The boats were hopping through the turn. In the mix the UL-10 was almost washed down, but new driver Cal Phipps was able to keep her running. At the start of three, the the pack had formed a line with the UL-40 in the lead followed by the UL-23 and the UL-10. This was the point where the UL-10 (not seen on the circuit in quite some time) found it's opening and powered past the UL-23. The UL-10 would catch up to the UL-40 by the end of the fourth lap. Just when the UL-10 was about to take the UL-40, the Roostertail sponsored UL-40 hull found a bust of energy and pulled ahead. Great racing to say the least! Randy Haas would take the win and the UL-38 would not challenge the lead pack. Both the UL-102 and the UL-25 made it out onto the course, but could not make the start. Saturday, 2:57 PM - Unofficial order of finish for Heat 1B... 1st - UL-110 Beach Grille Saturday, 2:46 PM - This time out, Phil Bononcini and the UL-72 jumped to the early lead. Vince Xaudaro was hard charging in second, but was no match for the current Unlimited Lights points leader. Vince would not go unchallenged for second. Valleyfield winner, Pingree Conflitti's UL-58 would catch and overtake Xaudaro. In the end, the UL-58 would go down and metal parts were spotted flying as it went down. This gave Xaudaro back the second place spot. A real suprise this time out was the UL-15 Happy Go Lucky/Freddie's Club. Normally a frontrunner, the hull appeared to struggle quite a bit as it rounded the course. Bononcini's UL-72 lapped the UL-15 before the end of the heat. The UL-19 made it out onto the water, but was unable to make the start eventually ending in the middle of the course. Saturday, 2:35 PM - Unofficial order of finish for Heat 1A... 1st - UL-72 Budweiser/Pocket Mechanic Saturday, 12:30 PM - Here's your line-up for the initial heats and the Automotive Gold Cup...

Saturday, 10:00 AM - Yesterday a group of fifteen or so people approached the UL-15 Happy Go Lucky/Freddie's Club pit area and started checking out the boat and the blown motor. The UL-15 is set up in the roostertail turn of the Unlimited pits, the only UL not over on Bell Isle. As the team talked with the fans, one gentleman stepped forward, laid $50 down on the table and called out "Fire her up! I want to hear her run" The team was waiting for an opportunity to meet the request when the gentleman returned and laid a second $50 on the table. "I said fire her up!" A few minutes later, the pits were alive with the sound of Poppa Hopp's thundering UL-15. Friday, 1:00 PM - Our thirtieth team has entered the pits! Scott McGregor's UL-102 Edward Jones Associates team is now in the pits of Bell Isle. Friday, 10:00 AM - The Wiggins Racing Team is now officially back with the series!
