Friday at Tastin' n Racin'! It looks like we will have a full fleet of 10 and 12 Unlimited Lights during the next two days of racing here in Issaquah, WA. Let's run down the list of boats expected to compete at Tastin' n Racin'...
We are unsure at this time if we will see Wilsey Hamilton's UL-20 and Vince Xaudaro UL-929 will take to the water if final engine work has the hull ready to compete. Many of the teams made their way to Joe Frauenheim's home this evening for a round of pre-race dunk tests. Where is Randy and Carl Haas' UL-110 Miss CompAir this weekend? Randy has been sidelined following leg surgery, but the following update comes direct from the desk of Joe Frauenheim... "Randy Haas has fully recuperated and his left leg is as strong as ever to operate the fly lever. He is looking forward to testing the meddle of the fleet in Tonawanda and offered his facilities in Toledo to store anyone's boat between races back east. He is located in Toledo, Ohio about 1 hour from Detroit. We have availed ourselves of this offer many times thru the years and can attest to Randy's, Tracy's, Carl's, and Judy's great hospitality. Also the Toledo parts house is helping Dave and Gene Bender (UL-38) this weekend with some critical coupling parts. This is what UL racing is about." We would also like to welcome Chris Stratton to the ULHRA family. Chris is in Issaquah, Washington this weekend helping set up the festival and crewing for the UL-72. We are happy to have him with the UL community! Late last night, the UL-14 Jacobsen Excellence, UL-17 Ted's Red Apple Markets/Johnsonville Brats, UL-19 Spirit of Couer D'Alene, UL-21 Issaquah Signs, UL-23 Index Homes, UL-38 Security Race Products, UL-49 Lake Pateros Motor Inn, UL-72 Pocket Mechanic/Budweiser and UL-929 were in the pits with the UL-3 Hogan Racing Team and the UL-15 Freddie's Club Lite expected to arrive the following morning. The two teams were in place by the drivers meeting. Additionally, last night between 20 to 30 people were at the Frauenheim's for dunk testing and all who were tested passed. Saturday at Tastin' n Racin'! The morning and early afternoon were plagued with rain, but 12 qualified drivers were in attendance for the morning driver's meeting. Both Greg and Jerry Hopp were registered to drive the UL-15 Freddie's Club Lite. Vince Xaudaro was also recognized as the backup for the the UL-49 Lake Pateros Motor Inn. Many from both the Unlimited Light and the Unlimited community were in attendance including U-25 pilot/owner Dr. Ken Muscatel, Jim and Charlotte Riley (chaplain for the weekend), Dave Kancianich, Wayne Howard, Dave Cossett, Steve Reynolds, Steve Montgomery, Tom Bock and others. One other item of note, the UL-3 has been renamed. It is no longer the Hogan Racing Team.
It is now the UL-3 Bounty Hunter! Testing and Qualification The weather led to a slow start to the day. Some items of note this morning, UL-14 Jacobsen Excellence made it onto the water for the first time since it changed hands, successfully completing a couple laps. The UL-15 Freddie's Club Lite made it onto the water, but was heard popping and returned to the shore. Qualification followed the initial testing. Here are the final results of the morning qualification...
Heat 1A Draw: UL-14 Jacobsen
Excellence, UL-49 Lake Pateros Motor Inn, UL-17 Ted's Red Apple Markets/Johnsonville
Brats, UL-21 Issaquah Signs, UL-15 Freddie's Club Lite Please note that qualification is simply for season high points. Lack
of a team qualifying does not preclude the team from participating in heat
competition during this weekend's event. Heat 1A Results
Steve Hook's UL-49 Lake Pateros Motor
Inn made it out onto the water, but was unable to make the
heat. The first heat was delayed one hour due to rain. It was coming
and going through the morning but let up for clear blue skies for the afternoon
and evening. Heat 1B Results
The UL-23 Index Homes team looked solid up until the final lap where the boat went down
just prior to the finish. The UL-19 Spirit of Couer D'Alene spun prior to the start and did not
make the heat. The UL-3 Bounty Hunter thrashed to get the boat into the heat, but just
missed the start. Heat 2A Results
No one is certain at this point what happened to the
UL-23 Index Homes, but it made it
about 20 feet from the dock and went down. The UL-19 Spirit of Couer
D'Alene blew an engine during
the spin in 1B and did not make the heat. * The UL-17 Ted's Red Apple Markets/Johnsonville
Brats was assessed a one
lap penalty for jumping the start and had a recalculated speed of 57.848. Heat 2B Results
This heat was described as a "blistering heat" between the UL-72
Pocket Mechanic/Budweiser
and the UL-38 Security Race Products. The two boats were neck-in-neck from start to finish.
At the very end, the UL-72 Pocket Mechanic/Budweiser pulled ahead by a half boat length to take the
win. Check those speeds. It was close! The UL-21 Issaquah
Signs quit in the
back stretch. UL-49 Lake Pateros Motor Inn tried to make the heat, but in the end was a DNS. Points following day one

decided to run a "B-Main". For the final, the first 3 boats in
points will automatically advance and the first two from the B-Main will fill
out the remaining spots for a 5-boat final. B-Main Results
Good race between the UL-15 Freddie's
Club Lite, UL-14 Jacobsen Excellence, UL-3 Bounty Hunter and UL-49 Lake Pateros
Motor Inn until the UL-3 Bounty Hunter & UL-49 Lake Pateros Motor Inn
went down. UL-49 Lake Pateros Motor Inn only needed a half of a lap to finish. Final Heat Results
UL-15 Freddie's Club Lite (driven by Greg Hopp) took lane 1 and UL-72 Pocket Mechanic/Budweiser was in lane 2. The two hulls ran neck and neck for the first few laps before Phil Bononcini cut inside the third buoy of turn 2, forcing Hopp to go with him. Bononcini was penalized one minute for the infraction. UL-3 Bounty Hunter was the first alternate but was unable to run since everyone started the race. The race itself was described as "one of the best ever seen". Be sure to catch the race when it airs on Speedvision for the first time on Sunday July 15 at 1:00 PM and join the excitement.
